A memo issued by Democratic Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers’ administration directs state workers to contact an lawyer earlier than providing any cooperation if they’re encountered within the office by a federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent.

The April 18 memo directs workers to:

Not reply the ICE agent’s questions.

Republican U.S. Rep. Bryan Steil of southern Wisconsin criticized Evers after the April 25 arrest of Milwaukee County Choose Hannah Dugan. She is charged with obstructing immigration authorities from arresting a prison defendant in her courtroom.
Evers stated he didn’t encourage state workers to interrupt the regulation.

GOP lawmakers requested him to rescind the memo.
